The Book of Chances
Orders for the summer 2024 batch of the Book of Chances are now closed and are in the manufacturing and shipping process. Customers will be notified by email when their order has shipped.
The Book of Chances will be returning later this year with all-new artwork - sign up to be notified when it's available!
Please note that the artwork on these cards incorporates some AI generated elements, and we’ve heard the concerns our community has raised about AI art tools. Future batches of cards will be redone with different art, and all proceeds from this round will be donated to Sketch, an organization in Toronto that provides arts programming and meals for marginalized young people. Watch this video if you’re interested in more details about this.
The Book of Chances is a deck of 55 playing cards (a regular set with three Jokers) where each card has additional markings to aid musicians as they write and produce. Created by Andrew Huang with art by Emurse (Scott Kehres), cards can be drawn and used in a variety of ways to spark inspiration or give directions whenever you’re feeling stuck, or even to provide you with a starting point.
Nodding to Brian Eno’s famed Oblique Strategies, and an homage in title to John Cage’s work using the I Ching (“Book of Changes”) to create music from chance operations, The Book of Chances was conceived to also be able to provide more concrete musical input into your process. And, you can actually use it to play card games!
Watch Andrew’s overview of the cards with some example use cases, and see them in action at Abbey Road Studios where they inspired a melody during a recording session. These are only a few of many approaches you can take with the deck, and everyone who purchases it will be given access to exclusive content that shows all the methods Andrew has come up with for using it.
Orders are expected to arrive later in summer 2024.
NOTE: Due to customs complications, we are unable to fulfill orders to Brazil and Colombia; any orders placed from these countries will be automatically canceled and refunded. Our shipping service has also noted delivery in Mexico can be uncertain. Sorry for the inconvenience!
